First run

Jompter's six onboarding steps on first launch, from choosing Local or Cloud mode to your first model — and why closing the window doesn't quit.

The first launch walks you through setup. You can stop part way — Jompter remembers which step you reached and resumes there next time.

Closing the Jompter window does not quit the app. It hides it, and the app keeps running in the menu bar. Press ⌘⇧J to bring it back, or click the menu bar icon. To actually quit, use Quit Jompter in the menu bar popover.

The six steps

1. Welcome

Choose how Jompter should run:

  • Local — everything on your Mac, offline. You will download a speech model in step 5.
  • Cloud — nothing to download, works immediately, needs internet and an account.

2. What you can do

A tour of the four inputs: dictate anywhere, snap and annotate, video prompts, and the one rolling prompt they all feed.

3. Permissions

Four macOS permissions — Microphone, Accessibility, Remote input and Screen Recording — granted one Grant button at a time. Continue setup stays disabled until all four read Granted, with a line saying how many are still needed; a tick only appears once macOS confirms the permission, not when you click. This is the step worth reading carefully — see Permissions.

Some grants only register after a relaunch. If one still says Grant after you turned it on in System Settings, click the Restart button that appears under it — onboarding reopens on this step.

You do not need to restart for dictation, though: holding Right ⌘ starts working the moment Accessibility is granted.

4. Test your microphone

Pick your input device and watch the level meter move while you talk. If the bar does not move, the microphone permission has not actually been granted, or macOS is listening to a different device.

5. Run mode

Confirm Local or Cloud.

  • Local — download a speech model here. Sizes and languages are explained in AI models.
  • Cloud — sign in. Jompter opens your browser; you sign in there and it hands control back to the app.

Also set your transcription language here. auto works, but naming your language is more accurate.

6. Done

You land on the Prompts page.

After onboarding

Onboarding does not cover several of Jompter's features. They are worth ten minutes each:

There is no way to replay onboarding once it is complete. Everything it sets up is reachable from Settings, and every shortcut can be changed — or put back with Reset to defaults — in Shortcuts.
